Unity displays God’s glory

Unity among brethren is a sight to behold!  It is most rare and almost non-existent in today’s culture. Unity is being distorted in family and in church.  But a heart that desires after unity does not magnify the differences.  Instead, it will be passionate in serving one another with love and maintains a cordial peace.  Ephesians 4:4-6 says, “Thereis one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;  one Lord, one faith, one baptism;  one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”  Further, the Word says, “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Ephesians 4:16).

Years ago, in the Los Angeles Special Olympics, in the 50 metres running race, as the starter’s gun fired, off the contestants raced. As they rushed toward the finish line one boy left the track and started running toward his friends standing in the infield. Mr. Ken, the Coordinator of the events, blew his whistle, trying to get the boy to come back to the track, but all to no avail. Then one of the other competitors noticed, a Down ’s syndrome girl with thick bottle glasses. She stopped just short of the finish line and called out to the boy, “Stop, come back, this is the way.”  Hearing the voice, the boy stopped and looked. “Come back, this is the way” she called again. The boy stood there, confused. Realising he was confused, she left the track and ran over to him. She linked arms with him and together they ran back to the track and finished the race. They were the last to cross the line, but were greeted by hugs from their fellow competitors and a standing ovation from the crowd.

Beloved, to keep going in the bond of unity,it’s important to take time out from our own goals in life to help others find their way. Reflecting on the episode afterwards Ken was reminded of 1 Thessalonians 5:11 which says,Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus.Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to unity and to mutual edification.

Dear Father,

I pray in the name of Jesus Christ your Son to forgive us for our division. Give us the spirit of unity in family, church, country and in work place. Help us to be free of all differences in our heart so that we would be built together as a dwelling in which God reigns.  Help us to get away from the criticizing spirit, condemnation spirit and judgmental spirit that causes discord.  Heal our homes to restore our relationships, give us patience, and make us one.In the name of Jesus’ I pray. Amen.
