Believing God’s Promises

Dear sons and daughters in Christ,
Abraham’s father, Terah, did not know about God. One day, he took his son Abraham, his grandson Lot, Sarah wife of Abraham, to the land of Canaan. But, when they came to Haran, he died at an age of 205 years ( Genesis 11:32). Now, God compassionately called Abraham, from that family and he was 75 years old (Genesis 12:4). Abraham was childless. One day, God took him outside said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them” ( Genesis 15:5) and God went on to say, “No longer will you be called Abram ; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you”( Genesis 17:5-6). At a time, when his situation was hopeless, he was 100 years old and his wife couldn’t conceive, as she was past that age, he held on to God’s promise.
Similarly,God invites you lovingly and wants to deliver you from all your bondages, from the power of darkness and make you His own people ( Colossians 1:13). He has given you the promises from the scriptures, just as He gave to Abraham. Because, “you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light”. (1 Peter 2:9)
Abraham, believed in hope, the promise that God gave to him, “ I will make your descendants as the sands of the sea and stars of the heaven. With faith, he received what God promised and was convinced that He will bring it to pass ( Romans 4:18-21). And so, God did wonders in their lives; Sarah bore a child and God multiplied their descendants. Later on, again there was a test of Abraham’s faith. This time, God asked him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, who was a promised blessing. Yet! He held on to the promises that God gave him. When he didn’t hesitate to sacrifice his only son, God was pleased with him.
Several years back, my husband and my five years old daughter, Angel, were critically ill and were nearing death. I was in great distress. At this, time I happened to read the book of Job. I was encouraged by his life. He went through a time of great pain and agony: he lost all his wealth, all his riches, all his 10 children on the same day, and also to make matters worse, he was afflicted with a disease. In all this, he remained faithful to God. I too held on God’s words. And God miraculously, removed the shadow of death from my family and restored my happiness by sending His light.
Dear ones, sufferings and miseries may attack you and your family in many ways. During such time, you should diligently read God’s words and be comforted, rather than relying on any person for help or comfort. God has given you the promises, read it everyday, God will speak to you. The more you spend time in reading the scriptures, the more it will be a blessing for you, and you will enjoy God’s presence and comfort.
Father God, I believe in your promises, help me not to be discouraged in life. Grant me your Grace to hold on to your promises and to remain faithful to you.
In Jesus’ most precious name I pray.
